MORE INFORMATION: Former Middle Georgia resident and award-winning cookbook author, Gena Knox, visits the Sidney Lanier Cottage on November 12, 2013, to introduce her new cookbook, Southern My Way: Food & Family. The cookbook showcases 250 pages of full-color photographs and seasonal recipes, which have a healthy take on traditional Southern dishes. This book is already a best seller! Join us to learn more about modern versions of Southern cuisine while enjoying tasty treats.  Gena’s books will be available for sale at the Salon.

MORE INFORMATION: Jackie K Cooper is a film and book critic whose reviews appear on his personal website www.jackiekcooper.com, as well as rottentomatoes.com and huffingtonpost.com. His reviews also run in an assortment of newspapers in Georgia. In addition he is a featured guest on radio and TV shows across the South. He has his own weekly television show “The Jackie K Cooper Show” which runs on several cable channels in middle Georgia.

Cooper is the author of six books: Journey of a Gentle Southern Man, Chances and Choices, Halfway Home, The Bookbinder, The Sunrise Remembers and Back to the Garden. His latest book Memory’s Mist was published by Mercer University Press in September 2013.

WHO/WHAT: Macon textile artist, Wini McQueen, speaks about her work and recent travels

WHEN: Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Reception at 5:30 p.m. Presentation at 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Sidney Lanier Cottage, 935 High Street, Macon, GA 31201

MORE INFORMATION: Wini recently returned from a trip to Cot d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in West Africa and will share the sights, the sounds and the flavors of that exotic part of the world.   The public is invited to hear Wini tell her stories of the people, traditions and challenges she faced while seeking to learn about the pieced and story fabrics in this small African country. The audience will learn about African concepts of wealth and beauty and he role gender plays in the production and marketing of fabrics in Wini’s ancestral home.

Attendees will listen to the music, see photographs, taste the flavors as well as be invited to handle to tools and textiles used in everyday life and in traditional ceremonies of Cot d’Ivoire.  Some items will be available to purchase. Proceeds from the sales will go toward bringing Zan Stella, one of the Ivorian weavers, to Macon on an educational exchange mission.

This event is Free for Historic Macon members and only $5.00 for non-members. Students are $3. 


WHO/WHAT: Sidney Lanier Cottage Christmas

WHEN: Friday, December 6, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: Sidney Lanier Cottage, 935 High Street, Macon, GA 31201

MORE INFORMATION: The sweetest holiday tradition in Macon is quickly approaching. In the 1970s, the Middle Georgia Historical Society began selling baked goods at the Sidney Lanier Cottage during the holidays. Historic Macon Foundation has kept this tradition alive and will host Cottage Christmas on Friday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cottage Christmas is a complimentary open house showcasing the Sidney Lanier Cottage decorated for the holiday season. Baked goods will be for sale throughout the day while free admission is offered to the Cottage. Free refreshments will be served, and the Side Porch Gift Shop will have a holiday sale.

All bake sale items are homemade and donated by friends and supporters of Historic Macon and the Sidney Lanier Cottage. The bake sale includes everything from holiday casseroles and cheese straws to a variety of cakes and candy.
